There’s little sign of crisis at Arsenal. The club remains firmly among the Premier League elite, and this season likely ended with another second-place finish and a Champions League semifinal. Still, club legend Paul Merson believes Mikel Arteta’s days as manager could be numbered.
Five years – one trophy
Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson criticized the club’s inability to win silverware despite clear progress on the pitch.
He warned that the club’s leadership might run out of patience if Arsenal aren’t among the top two by Christmas next season.
“You’ve got to win something,” Merson said. “Arteta has brought the club back to life, but it’s not enough to keep coming close without bringing anything home.”
Arteta has been in charge since 2019. His only major triumph so far is the FA Cup win in 2020. Since then, the team has developed significantly – but without collecting trophies.

According to Merson, excuses no longer apply. Arsenal have the money, the talent, and the fans behind them. The problem? They’re still missing a proper striker, he claims.
“Players want to play for Arsenal. The club has rediscovered its identity. But they’re vulnerable. A couple of injuries to key players like Saka and Havertz, and things start to falter. They’re missing a clinical number nine – it’s obvious.”
Last chance approaching
Merson believes Arsenal are in a strong position, but he also warns against squandering the opportunity for success.
He points to clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United, who have gone through long trophyless periods because they failed to capitalize on their strengths in time.
He argues Arsenal risk falling into the same trap if they don’t act now.

Though he acknowledges Arteta’s efforts and the excitement he’s reignited among the fanbase, Merson thinks time is running out.
If results don’t follow soon, it could have consequences for the manager’s future.
