Tottenham wrote plenty of small print into Harry Kane’s 2023 move to Bayern Munich. They did not write in the Ballon d’Or.

The oversight became a story the moment Kane lifted the trophy in London on Monday 26 October, where he edged Kylian Mbappé by the narrowest of margins and finished ahead of Lamine Yamal to become the first English Ballon d’Or winner since Michael Owen in 2001.

Bayern Munich owe Tottenham nothing extra for the individual honour, according to OneFootball’s report, which cited Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg on the terms of the €100m deal struck in summer 2023.

Kane’s contract inside the Bayern dressing room tells a very different story. The England captain built his own Ballon d’Or trigger into the deal when he signed, with Sport Bild reporting that the bonus runs to more than €1 million, as relayed by FCBinside.

What Spurs did write in

The original transfer agreement did carry performance incentives for Tottenham, tied to Bayern’s success in the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Champions League. The individual prize was simply left out of a market in which such clauses have become routine on transfers of this size.

For Bayern themselves, the Ballon d’Or line is one of several bonus triggers inside Kane’s contract, which also rewards team silverware and goal milestones.

Extension “a matter of days”

Kane’s current Bayern contract runs until 2027. An extension taking him through 2029 is understood to be close.

Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen told beIN Sports that the headline terms were settled before the ceremony in London, with both parties now working through the legal details and the most important issues already agreed before the Ballon d’Or gala.

The deal has delivered what Bayern were buying when they broke their transfer record for the then 30-year-old striker. Kane has produced 156 goals and 40 assists in 159 appearances since joining, and his 2025-26 season carried a domestic treble and the European Golden Shoe. The extension is expected to be signed within days.
