The decisive one fell in a 129-117 win at State Farm Arena, where Adebayo finished with 24 points on 50 percent shooting, three assists and three steals in 33 minutes. Nine rebounds pushed him to 5,794 for his career, three clear of Haslem’s 5,791 mark that had sat atop the Heat’s all-time list since November 2012.

The man he passed is not an abstract name in a media guide. Haslem spent 20 seasons in Miami, played alongside Adebayo for six of them before his 2023 retirement, and remains one of the most recognisable figures in the franchise’s history. Adebayo was asked afterwards how it felt to overtake him.

“Man, I can’t really put it into words. The person I’m passing has been so close to me throughout my 10 years in this career, from the time I walked in until now,” Adebayo told reporters.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra, in his 19th season on the Heat bench, framed it as a locker-room moment rather than a scoreboard one.

“It was a really special moment in the locker room. So well-deserved. He’s done it with an iron will, a work ethic that’s unmatched,” Spoelstra said.

Second to Wade on almost every list

Adebayo is now the Heat’s career rebounding leader. He already sits second in franchise scoring behind Dwyane Wade, third in assists, third in steals and fifth in blocks, a spread no current Miami player comes close to matching.

He arrived in Miami as the 14th pick of the 2017 draft out of Kentucky and has never left. The three-time All-Star has anchored the Heat’s defence through two NBA Finals runs and the retirements of Wade and Haslem, mostly without the headline billing that follows the league’s bigger names.

A win that stopped the bleeding

The record came on the Heat’s fifth attempt to open the season. They had been 0-4 going into Atlanta, their worst start in close to a decade, and the pressure on the new-look roster was already starting to build.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks on 22 June in a deal that reshaped Miami’s frontcourt, matched Adebayo’s 24 points and pulled down 18 rebounds for his first win in a Heat jersey. Andrew Wiggins added 18, and third-year guard Pelle Larsson filled a line of 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Miami shot 53 percent and put up 70 points in the paint. On a night the frontcourt was supposed to be the story, it was.

The Heat are home against the Indiana Pacers on Friday in an Emirates NBA Cup group-stage game. Tip-off at Kaseya Center is at 8pm local time.
