Barcelona went into the summer with a straightforward question: pay €30 million to turn Marcus Rashford’s loan into a permanent deal, or spend more than twice that on someone else. They chose someone else.

That someone was Anthony Gordon. Barcelona signed the 25-year-old winger from Newcastle on 29 May 2026 for an initial €70 million, with add-ons that could push the fee above €80 million. He put his name to a five-year contract.

“This is the biggest club on the planet. It’s the stuff I dreamed of as a child,” Gordon said at his unveiling.

Four assists in four matches

Gordon has started the league season at the pace Barcelona wanted. He registered his fourth assist in four La Liga games in the 5-0 win at Valencia, collecting the ball with his back to goal inside the Mestalla penalty area before laying it off for Fermín López.

That is already twice as many assists as he produced across 26 Premier League appearances in his final Newcastle season.

Hansi Flick has not hidden his view of the fit.

“Today was a fantastic game, nearly perfect,” the German said after the Valencia win. “We had control, we were dominant.”

Barcelona have won their first 10 competitive matches of 2026-27, scoring 43 goals along the way. Flick has now won 98 of his first 127 games in charge, a 77% success rate that moves him past Luis Enrique as the best-performing coach in the club’s history by that measure.

The €30 million clause Barcelona let expire

Rashford’s own case for staying was not thin. During his loan from Manchester United, the England forward produced 14 goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances, playing a central part in a season that ended with La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, as Yahoo Sports noted when his option expired.

The purchase option in his loan deal lapsed on 15 June 2026 without being triggered. Yahoo Sports, citing ESPN’s reporting, described the decision as primarily financial, with Barcelona’s sporting department prioritising budget for other positions given salary-cap constraints. Gordon’s arrival absorbed what room there was.

The upshot was that Rashford went back to Old Trafford while Barcelona committed the extra €40m, and more, to a younger profile with higher off-the-ball output.

Why the pressing system favours Gordon

Flick’s Barcelona runs on an aggressive high press and quick transitions, and Gordon’s work without the ball has been one of the reasons Barca Universal, which first drew the direct comparison between the two forwards, pointed to him as the better fit for the system. The analysis credited his defensive work rate for keeping him in the starting eleven in seven of the opening 10 matches, with his finishing contribution still to catch up with his creative one.

Rashford, by the same account, had been operating in a Barcelona attack where the drop-off in intensity when he replaced Raphinha became difficult to overlook.

Barcelona top La Liga with a perfect record and will try to extend their winning run to 11 competitive matches when they next return to league action.
