Barcelonas future on Marcus Rashford
Barcelona will not trigger the €30 million buy option for Marcus Rashford, sending the England international back to Manchester United this summer after what club sources described as an "underwhelming" loan spell at Camp Nou.
The decision, reported by The Athletic and quoted by Goal.com marks a significant shift from Barcelona's initial interest in a permanent transfer.
Rashford, who amassed 12 goals and 13 assists across 44 appearances for the Catalan giants, failed to make a decisive impact in critical knockout fixtures, which ultimately cooled Barcelona's enthusiasm. His performances in the Champions League quarter-finals and Copa del Rey semi-finals against Atletico Madrid were particularly scrutinized.
Crucial fixtures highlight missed opportunity
Despite a respectable overall goal contribution tally, Rashford's inability to deliver in high-stakes matches proved to be a major factor in Barcelona's decision. The club had high expectations, especially when presented with a prime opportunity to cement his place in the starting XI.

He failed to record a single goal contribution across both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid. Similarly, he failed to contribute a goal or assist in the Copa del Rey semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona suffered defeats in both of these crucial ties to Atletico Madrid, having previously lifted the Supercopa de Espana in January against Real Madrid.
Club officials noted that Rashford had a "golden chance" to seize a regular starting role while Raphinha was sidelined, but he ultimately failed to grasp it.
Barcelona shift focus to new targets
The club's hierarchy had previously met with Rashford’s representatives to discuss a permanent move, with personal terms not expected to be an issue. However, the coaching staff are now prioritising other profiles for the forward line.

Julian Alvarez remains a primary target for Barcelona for the summer, while Osasuna winger Victor Munoz is also high on the club's list as they look to bolster their attacking options.
Despite the decision regarding his long-term future, Rashford remains a part of Hansi Flick’s immediate plans for Barcelona's remaining league games.
The team is currently focused on securing a second consecutive league title, holding a nine-point lead over Real Madrid with six games left in La Liga.
Rashford will return to Manchester United this summer, where he is under contract until 2028, facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford unless another club emerges to match United’s valuation.
