Max Eberl did not spare Zlatko Tripic. Bayern Munich’s sporting director had just watched his side throw away a 3-2 lead with just over twenty minutes to go, after Michael Olise hurled the ball into the Viking captain’s face in Stavanger on Tuesday and collected two yellow cards within seconds.

The verdict afterwards was unusually blunt for a man in a boardroom role.

“He played like a scumbag. He wanted to win the game, but we let ourselves be provoked and he got what he wanted, which was that one of our players was sent off,” Eberl told reporters.

Bayern had looked on course for a routine Champions League win. Viking led 2-0 inside 38 minutes through Gianni Stensness and Peter Christiansen, before Harry Kane halved the deficit from the penalty spot on 54 minutes and headed level on the hour. Luis Díaz turned in the rebound after Laimer’s shot was saved on 71 minutes to put Bayern 3-2 up, according to ESPN’s match report. Then came the 74th minute.

Television pictures showed Olise and Tripic tangling off the ball. Olise’s answer was to throw the ball into Tripic’s face, and the referee produced yellow twice inside seconds. Herman Haugen headed in a 90th-minute equaliser against ten men to seal 3-3 for the hosts.

Tripic: ‘I won that duel with him’

Tripic made no effort to hide what he had been doing. The Viking captain called Olise’s dismissal “great” in a post-match interview with Norwegian broadcaster TV2, carried by Ran.

“It’s great that a player who will probably one day win the Ballon d’Or gets a little annoyed by a boy from Oftebro and Lyngdal.”

“He shouldn’t get too comfortable here.”

Tripic then spelled out that the baiting had been planned.

“And when I managed to pull his focus away from what he can do exceptionally well, he eventually lost his composure and threw the ball in my face. I feel I won that duel with him.”

Kompany: ‘100% his fault’

Vincent Kompany was not interested in sharing out the blame. The Bayern head coach pinned the dismissal squarely on his own player.

“It’s 100% his fault,” Kompany said, according to French Football Weekly, adding that Olise “knows he made a mistake” and that Tripic “had been smarter than him”.

Kompany’s verdict in the mixed zone was no softer. He called the red card “super dumb” and said “it was our own fault”, AFP reported.

Eberl was asked whether Bayern would respond with an internal fine for Olise. He stopped short of promising one.

“We’ll deal with it calmly,” he said.

Olise is suspended for Bayern’s next Champions League fixture, at home to Arsenal in Munich.
