The next contract challenge for Max Eberl is not a crisis. It is a 24-year-old winger he has not yet called.
Michael Olise’s current deal with Bayern Munich runs until 2029, and the club wants to tie him down beyond it. Yet in September, Bayern’s sporting director publicly confirmed that formal talks with the player’s camp had not begun.
“We would like to continue working with Michael for a long time, beyond 2029, ideally by extending his contract,” Eberl told reporters, while stressing that “there is a third party involved” and that no talks had yet taken place. He added that Bayern should know “by next summer” whether Olise is inclined to re-sign.
With Harry Kane’s extension now described by president Herbert Hainer as a matter of “details” rather than terms, Olise is effectively the only major contract left on Eberl’s desk, Yahoo Sports reported this month, citing Hainer in Bild. Hainer rejected the idea that the sticking point was contract length, saying negotiations centre on image and personal rights.

A squad locked down, Olise aside
The run of renewals under Eberl reads like a different Bayern from the one he inherited in March 2024: Alphonso Davies through 2030, Jamal Musiala through 2030, Joshua Kimmich through 2029 and, this year, Dayot Upamecano through 2030. Add Kane through 2029 and the only first-team contracts expiring next summer are those of goalkeepers Manuel Neuer, 40, and Sven Ulreich, 38, both widely expected to end their playing careers at that point.
For a Bayern sporting director, that is an unfamiliar landscape. The job has usually meant firefighting one squabble after another. For Eberl, Olise is now almost the entire portfolio.
€25m a year, and a clause the player wants in
The outline of Bayern’s offer has already leaked. French Football Weekly reported that Bayern want to extend Olise through 2032 and are prepared to pay him €25m a year from 2027, matching Kane and Jamal Musiala at the top of the wage structure.
The complication is the release clause. Olise’s camp wants one written into the new deal, something Eberl has avoided in the recent string of extensions. According to the same report, Bayern would accept a figure north of €200m, high enough to deter most bidders without closing the door entirely.

Real Madrid remain the obvious bidder to watch. The Spanish club tried to sign Olise in the summer window after a 2026 World Cup in which he provided seven assists for France, a tournament record that broke Pelé’s 1970 mark, and Bayern rejected the approach.
Kane the easy part
Kane’s extension, by contrast, now looks like paperwork. The England captain’s current deal expires next summer, and in late August he gave a cautious but positive read on talks after Bayern’s opening Bundesliga fixture against Stuttgart.
“The first meeting was this week. But these matters aren’t decided in one or two weeks,” Kane said. “There will be further talks about details. Talks have been positive. So far, so good.”
“I’d like to stay long term. We’ll have to see how many years that is.”

Hainer’s “details” framing, two months on, points to that extension being signed well before the season turns on it. The Olise one has not yet started.
