Chelsea have completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal worth a reported £117 million.
The 23-year-old England international has signed a contract until 2033 and will join Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 season after completing his post-World Cup break.
According to Sky News’ report on the transfer, the fee makes Rogers the most expensive British player in football history. It surpasses the £116 million Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer and Chelsea’s previous club record of £115 million for Moisés Caicedo.
It is not, however, the overall British transfer record. That remains the £125 million Liverpool paid Newcastle United for Alexander Isak in 2025, as described in Liverpool’s report citing BBC Sport.

Rogers delivers an instant London jibe
Rogers wasted little time in adding fuel to the rivalry between Chelsea and Arsenal.
“For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid,” he told Chelsea’s official website.
The remark was guaranteed to provoke a response from supporters of Arsenal and Tottenham, both of whom have their own claims to being the capital’s leading club.
Arsenal fan and talkSPORT host Laura Kirk-Francis was among those to reject Rogers’ assessment.
“No club has the culture and the streets like Arsenal, I’m sorry,” she said, as quoted by Ryan Smart in SPORTbible.
Kirk-Francis accepted that Chelsea’s recent success cannot be ignored, particularly their two Champions League titles. She nevertheless argued that Arsenal’s connection with their supporters and the club’s current relationship with its owners place them in a healthier long-term position.
Rogers had previously used similar language when discussing Aston Villa, describing his former side as the biggest club in Birmingham in his farewell message.
Chelsea beat Arsenal to their target
Arsenal had tracked Rogers throughout the summer and were widely expected to make an offer.

The Gunners never submitted a formal bid, however, and were reportedly unwilling to meet Villa’s valuation. According to Ryan Smart’s account of Fabrizio Romano’s reporting, Arsenal hoped to secure the forward for between £90 million and £100 million before Chelsea moved decisively with their £117 million proposal.
Rogers leaves Villa after two and a half seasons. The Premier League’s official statistics list him with 21 goals and 17 assists from 85 appearances, giving him 38 direct goal contributions rather than the 40 stated in Chelsea’s announcement.
He also helped Villa finish fourth in the Premier League and win the Europa League last season. Since making his senior England debut in November 2024, he has collected 22 caps and represented his country at the 2026 World Cup.
Alonso’s vision seals the move
The chance to reunite with Cole Palmer also appealed to Rogers. The pair have known each other since their early teens and played together in Manchester City’s academy.

Alonso’s personal involvement appears to have been even more important. Rogers spoke with Chelsea’s new manager before completing the transfer and was convinced by his plans for the team.
“Him being a part of that was a massive factor in me being here,” Rogers explained in a separate interview published by Chelsea.
Chelsea have paid a huge price for that belief. Rogers will now be expected to justify it while playing alongside Palmer, rather than watching him from across London in an Arsenal shirt.
