Bruno Fernandes names his ideal Manchester United successor

Manchester United’s summer planning is beginning to take shape, with midfield reinforcements expected to be a key focus as the club looks ahead to next season.

Among the names linked with a potential move is West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, who, according to a report by SPORTbible, has been recommended by United captain Bruno Fernandes as a future option in his position.

The development comes as United consider how to reshape their midfield over the coming years. Bruno Fernandes remains central to the team and is under contract until 2027, but the club are understood to be planning ahead for a long-term successor.

Mateus Fernandes, 21, has attracted attention despite West Ham’s difficult campaign. As highlighted in the SPORTbible report, he has been one of the more consistent performers in a side battling near the bottom of the table and earned his first senior Portugal call-up in March.

The midfielder joined West Ham from Southampton last summer in a deal worth around £40 million following their relegation. He has since made 30 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals.

If West Ham are relegated, financial pressure could force the club to consider offers, potentially making Fernandes available for a fee not far above their initial outlay.

SPORTbible also reports that Manchester City are monitoring the situation, with sporting director Hugo Viana having previously worked with Fernandes at Sporting Lisbon.

However, the same report suggests Fernandes is not Manchester United’s primary midfield target, with other options under consideration as part of a broader rebuild.

There is also ongoing speculation around Bruno Fernandes’ future, including links to the Saudi Pro League, although no move is currently considered imminent.

For now, United’s approach appears to balance immediate needs with long-term planning—reflected in their interest in emerging players like Mateus Fernandes.
