Rasmus Højlund was both dangerous in front of goal and sharp-witted as Manchester United took a big step toward the Europa League final with a comfortable 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night.
While his teammates celebrated on the pitch, Højlund delivered the entertainment afterward — with yet another cheeky remark on Instagram that quickly went viral among fans.
United’s lead widened when Bilbao’s Dani Vivian was sent off for bringing down Højlund in a clear goalscoring position.
That resulted in a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes calmly converted.
Just before the spot-kick, Casemiro had opened the scoring.
Bruno Fernandes also netted United’s third goal of the night.
With a 3-0 away win, United now look like clear favorites for the final.
After the match, Højlund posted on Instagram:
“First time a group of lads from Manchester leave Spain with a clean sheet.”
A not-so-subtle joke, playing on the double meaning of “clean sheet” — both in the football sense (not conceding a goal) and as a cheeky innuendo.
It’s not the first time Højlund has let his sense of humor shine.
After the quarter-final win over Lyon, he posted a photo hugging Harry Maguire with the caption:
“When the road to a semi gives you a semi.”
The double entendre caught major attention online at the time.
It’s been a mixed season for the Danish striker, who has struggled in the Premier League but has netted five times in the Europa League.
His performance in Bilbao, however, showed that he can still be a key figure for United.
With the final in Dublin on May 21 in sight — and either Tottenham or Bodø/Glimt as the opponent — Højlund and his teammates now have everything to play for.
And one thing is certain:
If United go all the way, we can count on Højlund to deliver another caption no one will forget.
