Carlos Alcaraz is into his fifth tour-level final of the year. The Spaniard ended Daniil Medvedev’s winning run 6-4, 7-6(2) at the Wiener Stadthalle on Saturday, according to the ATP.
The timing matters as much as the result. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has been off the tour since July. On October 6 the Italian announced that a persistent knee issue would keep him out for the rest of 2026, including the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
“Me together with the doctors have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over,” Sinner said in a video message, per SI.
With Sinner absent, Alcaraz is the clear form player closing out the calendar.

Medvedev’s run snapped
A single break settled the opening set for Alcaraz, who closed out the second-set tie-break 7-2 to avoid a decider.
“It’s a great feeling, beating someone like Daniil on an indoor court, after the [run] he was having,” Alcaraz told the ATP.
Medvedev had arrived in Vienna in strong form, and his place at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin was already secured by his run to the last four at the Erste Bank Open.
Zverev or De Minaur in the final
Alcaraz’s opponent on Sunday will come from the other semifinal between top seed Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur.
