Celtic reach decision on Wilfried Nancy after four defeats in two weeks

Celtic’s board have sought to quell growing speculation over Wilfried Nancy’s future by reaffirming their support for the head coach just weeks into his tenure. Sky Sports reported on December 18 that the club’s hierarchy continue to back Nancy despite a sharp downturn in results, with the Frenchman overseeing training at Lennoxtown as scheduled earlier that day.

The report suggested Celtic’s leadership remain aligned with Nancy’s long-term vision and are prepared to allow time for structural and tactical changes to take effect.

Difficult start following managerial change

Nancy arrived from MLS side Columbus Crew at the beginning of the month, stepping into the role after Brendan Rodgers was dismissed in late October. Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill had been placed in temporary charge during the interim period.

The transition has proven challenging. Celtic have lost four matches in fourteen days since Nancy’s appointment, including a 3-1 defeat to St Mirren in the Scottish League Cup final at Hampden Park on December 14. It marks the club’s worst run of results since 1978.

League position adds to pressure

The most recent defeat came on December 17, when Celtic were beaten 2-1 away at Dundee United. That result left the Scottish champions six points behind league leaders Hearts, although they do have a game in hand.

Frustration among travelling supporters was evident at full-time at Tannadice Park, with criticism directed at both the board and the new head coach. The reaction intensified debate over whether the club might be forced into an early reassessment.

Recruitment planning underway

Despite the mounting pressure, Sky Sports reported that Celtic’s board view the current difficulties as part of a broader rebuild rather than a sign of failure. The club is said to be reviewing which players best fit Nancy’s preferred system while identifying priority areas for reinforcement in the January and summer transfer windows.

Chief executive Michael Nicholson confirmed he met Nancy on December 17 to discuss recruitment strategy. Nancy’s appointment was made on the recommendation of head of operations Paul Tisdale, who is currently on holiday but is understood to remain closely involved in planning.

Sutton highlights scale of expectations

Speaking after the defeat at Dundee United, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton acknowledged the challenges facing the new manager but emphasised the pressure attached to the role.

Sutton said confidence among certain players has declined since Martin O’Neill’s interim spell ended and argued that performances this season have not been good enough. He added that Nancy must quickly restore belief within the squad and among supporters, particularly with Aberdeen visiting Celtic Park on Sunday.

Sutton also stressed that winning the league remains essential for Celtic, noting that Champions League qualification depends on securing the title.
