Chelsea have completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a record-breaking deal worth £117 million.
The England international passed his medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea also hold an option to extend the agreement by another season, potentially keeping him at the club until June 2033.
According to The Times’ account of the transfer, Chelsea concluded the deal within 72 hours after reviving their interest late in the negotiations. Arsenal had previously been considered the favourites to sign Rogers but were unwilling to meet Villa’s valuation.
Chelsea set a new record
The £117 million fee makes Rogers the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history, surpassing the £115 million paid for Moisés Caicedo in 2023.

It also makes the 23-year-old the most expensive English footballer, moving him ahead of Elliot Anderson, whose transfer from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City was reportedly worth £116 million.
Chelsea’s willingness to meet Villa’s asking price reflects the importance placed on Rogers by new manager Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard took charge in May and identified the versatile attacker as one of his leading targets for the summer.
As reported by talkSPORT, conversations with Alonso and Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali helped convince Rogers to choose Stamford Bridge. His friendship with former Manchester City academy teammate Cole Palmer is also believed to have influenced the decision.

He registered 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 appearances for Aston Villa during the 2025-26 campaign. He also played an important role as Villa won the Europa League and qualified for the Champions League.
His performances earned him a regular place in the England squad. Rogers started the World Cup semi-final against Argentina and created Anthony Gordon’s opening goal before England suffered a late defeat.
His ability to operate on either wing, behind the striker or in a deeper attacking role was one of the main reasons Chelsea pursued him.
The plan is reportedly for Rogers to compete primarily for a position on the left, allowing him to play alongside Palmer rather than directly replacing him.

Arsenal left frustrated by late intervention
Arsenal had tracked Rogers for more than a year and held discussions over a possible move before Chelsea entered the final stages of the negotiations.
The Premier League champions were reportedly prepared to pay around £80 million but refused to meet Villa’s increased valuation.
Chelsea took a different approach. Rather than attempting to negotiate the price down, the club moved quickly and agreed to pay the requested amount.
The Guardian previously described Rogers as one of Alonso’s priority targets and reported that Chelsea had accelerated their interest after England’s World Cup campaign.

The speed of the move ultimately left Arsenal with little opportunity to respond.
Villa secure enormous profit
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial fee of approximately £7 million, with further payments taking the total cost towards £15 million.
His sale therefore represents an exceptional return for Villa, even after accounting for Middlesbrough’s sell-on clause.
Middlesbrough are entitled to 20 per cent of Villa’s profit from the transfer and are expected to receive around £20 million from the Chelsea deal.

Villa must now replace a player who became central to Unai Emery’s attack. However, the income gives the club considerable room to strengthen several areas of the squad.
For Chelsea, the calculation is more straightforward. The club have paid a historic fee for a player they believe can become a central figure under Alonso.
Rogers will now be expected to justify that confidence as Chelsea attempt to recover from a disappointing season and return to the leading positions in English football.
