The London club have already completed one major deal with Atalanta this summer. Now, the line of communication between Stamford Bridge and Bergamo has reopened.
This time Chelsea’s interest concerns Honest Ahanor, the 18-year-old left-footed defender who has rapidly become one of Italy’s most valuable young players.
The name behind Chelsea’s call
Chelsea contacted Atalanta sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli to request information about Ahanor, according to TuttomercatoWEB.
The report describes the dialogue between the clubs as open, with further developments possible. However, there is no indication that Chelsea have submitted a formal offer.

Atalanta’s position also creates an immediate obstacle. The Serie A club do not want to lose Ahanor and would only reconsider if an exceptional proposal arrived from London.
Chelsea’s interest is not completely new. The Blues had been monitoring the teenager earlier in the transfer window, while Brighton have also considered a move.
Atalanta reportedly rejected two approaches for Ahanor this summer. The identities of those clubs were not disclosed, and Chelsea have not confirmed whether they were involved.
An 18-year-old with senior experience
Ahanor was born in Aversa in February 2008 to Nigerian parents. He developed in Genoa’s academy before joining Atalanta permanently during the summer of 2025.

Despite his age, the defender made 35 appearances across Serie A, the Champions League and the Coppa Italia last season. He scored once and accumulated approximately 1,900 senior minutes.
Ahanor is naturally left-footed and can operate as a centre-back, left-back or wing-back. His ball-carrying ability and comfort under pressure make him suitable for a team expected to build attacks from defence.
His progress has also reached international level. After receiving Italian citizenship, Ahanor made his senior Italy debut against Luxembourg in June and started the following friendly against Greece, as confirmed by Atalanta.
He was also ranked 12th on the 2026 NXGN list of the world’s leading young talents, reported by Gianluca Di Marzio’s website.

Atalanta could demand more than €50 million
Atalanta’s reluctance is understandable. Ahanor has become a first-team player only one year after arriving from Genoa, and his market value has risen sharply.
Brighton were previously told that a proposal above €50 million would be required to change Atalanta’s position, according to Quotidiano Sportivo.
That figure has not been presented as an official asking price for Chelsea. It nevertheless indicates the level of offer Atalanta may expect before entering serious negotiations.
When Ahanor was presented in Bergamo in 2025, he said he had “no hesitation” about choosing Atalanta despite interest from several leading clubs, as quoted by the club.

Atalanta chief executive Luca Percassi also praised the teenager’s maturity away from the pitch. A year later, that early investment appears to have produced another extremely valuable asset.
Chelsea return to a familiar source
Chelsea have already signed Marco Palestra from Atalanta this summer. The 21-year-old Italy international agreed a contract until 2033 after being named Serie A Defender of the Year.
The official Chelsea announcement described Palestra as a full-back capable of playing on both sides, a versatile profile that also appeals to Xabi Alonso.
Ahanor would represent an even longer-term investment. At 18, he already has experience in Serie A, the Champions League and the Italian national team.

Chelsea’s opening call does not mean a transfer is close. Atalanta hold the stronger negotiating position and appear determined to retain the player.
The next step depends on whether Chelsea’s interest becomes a concrete bid. If it does, Atalanta’s answer may carry one of the highest prices ever attached to an 18-year-old defender.
