The first high-profile name has emerged in what could become a difficult autumn for Manchester City’s dressing room. According to several transfer reports in the past week, Rayan Cherki is prepared to push for an exit if the sanctions handed down by the Premier League’s independent commission include relegation from the top flight.

The 23-year-old France international joined City from Lyon ahead of the 2025/26 season and has quickly become one of the club’s most valuable attackers, having lit up his first Premier League campaign.

His contract runs until 2030, but reports in Spain and England now point to a widening list of suitors.

A verdict that reshapes everything

Manchester City were found guilty of almost all of the 115 financial charges brought by the Premier League in 2023. The commission ruled that the club broke the rules across a nine-season period, inflating revenues and reducing costs by more than £900m through what regulators described as “sham” sponsorship contracts tied to Abu Dhabi funding.

The sanction has not yet been set. The commission has the power to fine the club, deduct points or recommend expulsion. City have maintained their innocence and are preparing an appeal.

That uncertainty is the backdrop against which Cherki’s situation now sits.

The clubs circling

Interest in the midfielder is not confined to one league. Several recent reports place Arsenal and Liverpool at the front of the Premier League queue, with Real Madrid and Barcelona watching from La Liga and Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain also tracking him from the continent.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke summed up the appeal.

“Cherki is a top player, he proved it last season, his first season in the Premier League, when he was outstanding for Man City.”

O’Rourke added that European clubs would be ready to move for City’s top performers if they become available. Bayern manager Vincent Kompany was reported to be “a huge admirer” of the player, with the Bavarians seen as a natural fit alongside Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala.

What City are facing

The sporting consequence of the verdict runs deeper than the league table. City are expected to challenge both the ruling and the process, but the appeal process is likely to take months. In the meantime, every leading player in the squad becomes a question for European recruiters, and Cherki is the first whose future has been publicly placed in doubt.

He has started the 2026/27 season well and has become an important member of the France set-up, factors that will only sharpen interest if the sanctions push City out of the top flight.

No formal bids have been lodged, and no club has publicly declared an intention to move in January.
