According to SPORTbible, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a frightening collapse on the pitch during an international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, June 7, 2026, in Odense, Denmark. The 34-year-old, who previously experienced a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, was reported to be conscious and stable following the incident.

The alarming scene unfolded in the second half of the match at Nature Energy Park. Eriksen clutched his chest before falling to the ground, prompting immediate concern from players and medical staff. Medics swiftly rushed to his aid, while players from both Denmark and Ukraine formed a protective huddle around him as he received treatment for approximately 13 minutes.

Eventually, Eriksen was able to get back to his feet, a sight that was met with a resounding standing ovation from the thousands of fans in attendance. He was then transported by ambulance from the stadium, with his wife Sabrina by his side. The referee, Sigurd Smehus Kringstad, subsequently abandoned the match with around 75 minutes played. Denmark had been leading 2-1 at the time, with goals from Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Maehle, while Viktor Tsygankov had scored for Ukraine just before half-time.

Pacemaker responded as it should

The incident immediately brought back memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 group stage match against Finland in 2021. Following that life-threatening event, he was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to regulate heart rhythm and deliver an electrical shock if necessary. Morten Boesen, Denmark’s national team doctor, who was credited with saving Eriksen’s life in 2021, confirmed the device’s efficacy in this latest episode.

Boesen provided an update on Eriksen’s condition, stating, “Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.” He added that Eriksen would undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine the cause of the incident.

The Danish FA also issued a statement confirming Eriksen’s condition and the match’s cancellation. “Christian Eriksen is conscious and feeling well according to the circumstances. The match has been called off,” the statement read, offering reassurance to the football world that had once again held its breath.
