Clasico display shuts the door: Real Madrid cancel January reinforcements

Convinced by the Camp Nou win and the Bernardo Silva-Arda Güler axis in midfield, Real Madrid have decided against any signings in the January transfer window, with Jose Mourinho’s blessing…

Real Madrid will not spend in January. The decision was taken at boardroom level in the days after the 2-1 win at Camp Nou, and it goes against the grain for a club that usually keeps its options open in the winter market.

The reasoning, reported by Spanish daily AS and relayed by Goal, is that management saw enough on 25 October to be convinced the squad can carry the season on its own. Mourinho’s midfield at the Camp Nou, built around Bernardo Silva and Arda Güler, is the specific reference point.

Kylian Mbappe’s brace, including his 100th goal for the club, settled the result and narrowed the gap on Barcelona to three points. The internal reading, though, was less about the goals than the control.

Mourinho holds the exit stamp

The policy is not quite as absolute as it sounds. The exit door is open, with one condition: no player leaves without Mourinho’s say-so, and the Portuguese is not currently minded to let anyone go.

That matters most to a handful of fringe midfielders and defenders who had been expected to look for January minutes elsewhere. For now they stay, which in turn removes the slot a winter arrival would have filled.

The defensive overhaul the club had quietly explored is also off. Fichajes reported on 31 October that Mourinho has blocked a January center-back signing, with Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni and Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck both parked as summer files at best. Real Madrid had conceded 15 goals in the first 13 fixtures of 2026-27; they have let in three in the last three.

Loan verdicts pushed to spring

Decisions on Madrid’s loanees are being held back. Jacobo Ramon and Nico Paz, both at Como, plus Rafa Marin and Victor Munoz, will have their recall options assessed in spring rather than mid-season.

Paz is the one most likely to force the question. Como blocked a Tottenham bid in the summer and Madrid now hold a €10m buy-back clause they can activate between 1 and 15 July next year. His form at Como keeps him on the shortlist of clubs that would move in January if Madrid signaled he was available. They are not signaling that.

For the rest of Europe, the practical message is short: a Madrid player you were planning to bid for in January, or a target you expected Madrid to buy and leave you a replacement budget for, is not moving. Clubs will have to look elsewhere.

Mourinho’s next test is in the Champions League, away to AEK Athens on 4 November.
