Closing in on Champions League – but tough calls remain for Man Utd

Manchester United's recent 2-1 victory over Brentford kept their Champions League qualification hopes alive, leaving them just two points shy with four games remaining. However, the immediate future at Old Trafford is dominated by significant decisions, not least the impending departure of midfielder Casemiro and a critical managerial search.

The veteran Brazilian, 34, played the full 90 minutes against Brentford, even netting his third successive home goal. Despite his recent contributions, his time at the club is drawing to a close. As Casemiro made his way down the tunnel, the Stretford End chanted, "One more year, one more year Casemiro," a sentiment not echoed by those in the know.

Confirming the inevitable, Michael Carrick, a figure who recently met with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, stated unequivocally when asked if Casemiro's United career would end next month, "Yes." He elaborated on the mutual understanding: "It is pretty clear, from both sides." Carrick acknowledged the midfielder's impact, adding, "Cas has had an influence in the group. He has huge experience and given everything you can possibly give. But it's football. Players come and go." Casemiro arrived at Old Trafford in 2022, following Erik ten Hag's lengthy and ultimately unsuccessful pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.

Midfield overhaul and transfer strategy

Casemiro's departure creates a significant void, making central midfield the priority area for strengthening. The club's new transfer approach aims to avoid protracted negotiations and overpaying, focusing instead on value and multiple options. Nottingham Forest's Elliott Anderson has emerged as the number one target, though Manchester City also reportedly covets the player. This strategy marks a shift from previous windows, which saw pursuits like that of Antoine Semenyo in January.

The urgency to bolster the squad is amplified by the prospect of a dramatically increased fixture list. Manchester United's current campaign features 40 matches, but the next season could see a 50% rise in games, necessitating greater depth across all positions.

Managerial crossroads

Beyond player recruitment, the club faces a contentious decision regarding its next manager. While Michael Carrick has met with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the search extends to several high-profile names. Luis Enrique is considered a standout candidate, though Paris St-Germain are reportedly confident he will sign a new deal. Julian Nagelsmann, currently with Germany, presents another option, but his contract runs until 2028, and a potential World Cup final appearance could clash with United's pre-season schedule, which includes a game against Wrexham in Helsinki.

Thomas Frank, who spoke to United in 2024, is also believed to be in consideration, according to BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone. With Champions League qualification still within reach, Manchester United stands at a critical juncture, needing to make decisive moves on and off the pitch to shape its future.
