Club discuss potential move for Lewandowski

Chicago Fire have held discussions with Robert Lewandowski as the Poland international approaches the final months of his contract at Barcelona.

The 37-year-old forward is due to become a free agent at the end of the season, and Chicago see next summer as a possible opportunity to add a globally recognised striker to their squad.

BBC Sport reported that talks between Chicago Fire and Lewandowski’s representatives have been positive. Sources indicated the player is open to a move to the United States and that financial terms are not expected to present a significant barrier.

Lewandowski is understood to be considering his next steps as he plans the latter stage of his career. While his future remains undecided, an MLS move is viewed as a realistic option, according to BBC Sport.

Chicago currently hold an advantage under league rules after placing Lewandowski on their discovery list. That designation grants the club exclusive negotiating rights within MLS unless another team agrees to compensate them.

Fire returned to the MLS play-offs this season for the first time since 2017 and have been active in assessing high-profile additions as part of their longer-term strategy.

The club’s pursuit also carries cultural significance. Chicago is home to the largest Polish community in the United States, and Lewandowski’s wife, Anna, visited the city last month during a trip to the US, BBC Sport reported.

On the field, Lewandowski continues to perform at the highest level. Since joining Barcelona in 2022 on a four-year deal, he has scored 109 goals in 164 appearances and helped the club win La Liga twice. This season, he has eight goals in 17 matches, with Barcelona four points clear at the top of the table.
