David Ornstein reveals Liverpool’s stance on Mohamed Salah’s future
Liverpool’s planning for the second half of the season is unfolding under the shadow of uncertainty surrounding Mohamed Salah, but the club is maintaining a firm stance: the Egyptian forward is not expected to leave before the campaign ends.
Salah reappeared in Liverpool’s squad during last weekend’s 2–0 win over Brighton, though his return did little to quiet the debate triggered by his sharp criticism following the 3–3 draw at Leeds. His claim that the club had “thrown him under the bus” intensified scrutiny of his relationship with manager Arne Slot and the coaching staff.
Club stance remains unchanged
Speaking on NBC Sports, David Ornstein of The Athletic said Liverpool have made no indication that Salah will be allowed to depart mid-season. Ornstein noted that the club has not offered a detailed explanation for the situation, but several factors underpin their internal position.
According to Ornstein, Liverpool believe their commitment was already demonstrated when they extended Salah’s deal through 2027 on significant terms. While Salah is understood to have voiced frustration about not being guaranteed regular starts, the club’s view is that no player regardless of status receives such assurances.

Slot has previously said discussions with Salah began before the Leeds match, suggesting the issues did not emerge overnight.
Form and role in question
Salah’s reduced role has reflected a dip in output compared with last season’s title-winning campaign, when he produced 29 goals and 18 assists. This year he has four goals and three assists in 14 league appearances, and he has begun Liverpool’s past four league fixtures on the bench. His most recent goal came in the win over Aston Villa on 1 November.
Those selection decisions have fueled questions about how he fits into Slot’s evolving setup, particularly as Liverpool balance competing demands in domestic and European competitions.
AFCON departure complicates January plans
Salah’s departure for the Africa Cup of Nations leaves Liverpool without their most prolific attacker for several weeks a gap the club is considering how best to address as the transfer window opens.

GIVEMESPORT’s Fabrizio Romano has reported growing interest across the league in Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, who could become available should a club trigger his £65 million release clause. Liverpool are among the sides monitoring the situation, though the club is expected to weigh any move carefully given broader squad needs.
For now, Liverpool’s priority appears to be stability: ensuring Salah remains part of the squad while navigating a pivotal stretch of the season.
