David Raya hailed as world’s best after Arsenal heroics

David Raya’s most important contribution in Lisbon may not show up fully in the final scoreline but it defined the result.

Before Kai Havertz’s late goal secured a 1-0 win over Sporting in the Champions League, Arsenal were being kept in the tie by their goalkeeper. Raya produced a string of high-level saves at crucial moments, ensuring Mikel Arteta’s side stayed within reach of victory on a night when pressure was building.

According to BBC Sport, the Spanish international made four key stops during the match, including an early intervention to tip Maxi Araujo’s powerful effort onto the crossbar. He followed that with a series of late saves as Sporting pushed for a breakthrough.

The timing of that performance was significant. Arsenal arrived in Portugal facing renewed scrutiny after back-to-back domestic cup defeats matches in which Raya did not feature. Arteta’s decision to start Kepa Arrizabalaga in those fixtures, particularly the Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City, had drawn criticism after a costly mistake.

Against Sporting, Raya offered a reminder of his value.

Havertz, who scored the winning goal, was emphatic in his assessment. “Unbelievable,” he told Amazon Prime. “I think he is still underestimated in the world of football but for me, the last two seasons, the best keeper in the world. He’s outstanding, he’s saved us so many times.”

Raya’s consistency this season supports that argument. He has now kept 22 clean sheets in 41 appearances across all competitions, more than any goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues, as reported by BBC Sport. Seven of those have come in the Champions League, highlighting Arsenal’s defensive strength on the continental stage.

After the match, Raya framed his role in collective terms. “I’m trying to help the team as much as possible in any single action,” he said. “Not just defending but commanding and on the ball.”

That final point reflects a broader shift in the modern game. Goalkeepers are now expected to contribute to build-up play as much as shot-stopping, something Arteta has emphasized in his system.

“The keeper in the last few years has changed and evolved rapidly,” Arteta said. “The amount of things that we ask him to do it’s a lot.”

While the Arsenal manager stopped short of calling Raya the world’s best, his admiration was clear: “He’s extraordinary, magnificent, incredible.”

Domestically, Raya’s numbers are just as strong. His 15 Premier League clean sheets place him among the division’s most effective goalkeepers, reinforcing his importance to a side chasing success on multiple fronts.

If Arsenal are to turn strong performances into silverware this season, they may depend as much on the moments Raya prevents as the goals their forwards score.
