Memphis Depay Told to Leave $46K Hotel Suite as Corinthians Cut Costs

Brazilian club Corinthians has requested that Dutch-Ghanaian striker Memphis Depay vacate his lavish suite at the Rosewood São Paulo hotel, as the team faces financial tightening.

The accommodation, costing roughly $46,000 per month, was part of Depay’s deal when he joined from Atlético Madrid in July 2024.

Costly comfort

According to UOL Esporte, the club’s president, Osmar Stábile, personally asked the player to find a cheaper residence. The hotel package includes a private chef, butler, armored car, and round-the-clock service, all covered by the club under the original contract.

Depay, who earns one of the highest salaries on the team, has reportedly agreed to look for a new home. However, local reports say he remains at the hotel with no confirmed date for his move.

Contract complications

The clause granting Depay hotel accommodations was included in his contract as part of negotiations to secure his transfer to Brazil.

Fans on social media have since questioned the club’s financial judgment, with many pointing out that the luxury deal could strain Corinthians’ already tight budget.

One user wrote, “Were they drunk when they gave him the deal? Didn’t they check their finances to see if they could afford that?” Others joked that Depay “will finish their money before he gives them a cup.”

Public reaction

The news quickly spread across platforms like X (formerly Twitter), with posts from journalists and fans sparking debate about the balance between player comfort and club spending. Sports commentator Danilo Lavieri of UOL confirmed the report, emphasizing that “by contract, Corinthians pays for the accommodation.”

Supporters remain divided, some defend the striker, arguing the club must honor its contractual obligations, while others view the arrangement as a sign of poor financial planning by management.

Fiscal tightening

Osmar Stábile’s administration has been implementing several cost-cutting measures to stabilize the club’s finances. Asking Depay to move out is one of multiple steps aimed at reducing unnecessary expenses while keeping key players satisfied.

Despite the internal tension, both sides are reportedly maintaining open communication, with no signs of a public dispute.
