According to The Guardian, Enzo Maresca’s first major challenge as Manchester City manager is not on the training pitch but in the transfer market, with the new boss tasked with persuading Rodri to remain at the Etihad Stadium amid serious interest from Real Madrid. Having succeeded Pep Guardiola after guiding Chelsea to a fourth-place Premier League finish and Conference League success, Maresca immediately faces a battle to keep one of the world’s most influential midfielders.

Rodri’s unparalleled influence

Rodri has become the heartbeat of Manchester City’s success over recent years. The 30-year-old Spain international was instrumental in City’s historic treble-winning campaign in 2022-23, scoring the decisive goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan and establishing himself as one of the finest holding midfielders in world football.

His impact has stretched far beyond club football. Rodri captained Spain to victory at the 2026 World Cup, where he was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. He had already claimed player of the tournament honours at Euro 2024 and the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup, while his consistent performances have reportedly put him in contention for a second Ballon d’Or.

Despite undergoing minor back surgery earlier this week, The Guardian reports that the issue is not expected to have any long-term impact, leaving his value to both Manchester City and potential suitors unchanged.

Real Madrid ready to make their move

According to The Guardian, Real Madrid are preparing a major bid for Rodri as they look to strengthen their midfield. The Spanish champions believe the former Atlético Madrid player would be an ideal addition, despite his previous ties to their city rivals.

Rodri himself has previously refused to rule out a switch to the Santiago Bernabéu.

“Having played for Atlético before would not prevent me from playing for Real Madrid. There are other players who have done that before. Maybe not direct transfers, but eventually. You can’t turn down one of the world’s best clubs.”

The report adds that Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who was previously reluctant to pursue Rodri, has changed his position following the midfielder’s continued success for both club and country.
