Andoni Iraola came to Florian Wirtz’s defence before Liverpool’s midweek Champions League tie, calling the German a player he trusts “100%”.
Hours later, reporting from TEAMtalk, picked up by Caught Offside, had Bayern Munich sources describing growing internal talks about whether a return to the Bundesliga could be prised open.
Those conversations, the report said, remain exploratory rather than official, and no formal approach has been made.
Bayern’s belief that Wirtz would say yes
Bayern have admired Wirtz for years and tried to sign him before Liverpool secured him in 2025. What is new is their reported belief that the player himself would be open to leaving after a single season in England.

Former Premier League scout Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider, put it bluntly.
“The main problem for Wirtz is he has seemingly struggled to adapt to the Premier League.”
“I’m sure, if an offer was to come in, then he’d want to join Bayern Munich because he would be a much better fit for the way they play.”
Liverpool’s ‘no sale’ line
Liverpool, according to Football365, insist “there are currently no discussions about a sale.” The 23-year-old is under contract until 2030, and the club see him as a long-term signing rather than a short-term error to be reversed a year after his arrival.

Any German move would also have to clear financial hurdles Bayern are reportedly still weighing privately, from squad balance to wages.
No goals in six league games
The pressure comes from his output. In six Premier League appearances this season Wirtz has no goals and one assist, a thin return for a club-record £116m signing after 5 goals and 3 assists in 33 league games last term.
Pundits have begun to lose patience. On talkSPORT this week, Jason Cundy went further than most.
“I think he could go down as the biggest waste of money the Premier League has ever seen, I genuinely do.”

Cundy added that Wirtz looks frightened on the ball and said an uncomfortable conversation about his future needs to happen.
Wirtz has 56 appearances and 7 goals for Liverpool. His contract runs to 2030.
