Manchester United faces a crucial decision regarding the future of head coach Ruben Amorim. And if you ask iNews’ chief writer Kevin Garside, the club needs to act now. In a striking opinion piece on Tuesday, Garside argued that Amorim has failed to elevate the team – and that letting him continue would be a mistake.
The warning follows United’s 0-2 home defeat to West Ham at Old Trafford over the weekend – their 17th loss of the season and the 13th under Amorim’s leadership.
A team without direction or belief
Garside describes Amorim as a coach who “looks like a man living on borrowed time.” Despite the upcoming Europa League final against Tottenham, Garside believes United’s issues run far deeper than just one match.

After the defeat, Amorim displayed notable honesty, refusing to blame the players and instead suggesting he might be part of the problem. “If we start like this again, or if the feeling remains, we should make room for someone else,” he said.
According to Garside, the statement was both sincere and concerning. The coach appeared disheartened, frustrated – and lacking a plan to turn things around.
Garside criticizes Amorim’s tactical approach as “dogmatic,” and says the players clearly don’t understand or believe in the system. The loss to West Ham came just days after a 7-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League, but in the Premier League, the team looks like a group lacking structure and spirit.
To Garside, it’s a sign of fundamental mental and tactical emptiness – and the ultimate responsibility lies with Amorim.

Management also under pressure
But the criticism isn’t limited to the coach. Garside also points the finger at the club’s leadership and Ineos’ sporting structure. It was Sir Dave Brailsford, Jason Wilcox, and Omar Berrada who appointed Amorim – just months after extending Erik ten Hag’s contract.
Now, Garside says, Sir Jim Ratcliffe must ask himself whether his own people are the right ones to lead United forward.
Garside believes the club risks repeating last summer’s mistake – investing heavily in a coach who couldn’t deliver. Giving Amorim another summer of influence could, in his view, make matters worse.
“Amorim is no apprentice. He’s the professor with all the answers – except the ones that work,” Garside writes in iNews.

With only six wins in 25 matches and a goal difference of 30-41, the numbers speak for themselves. And unless the leadership acts soon, Garside warns, the club could be heading into yet another season without direction, a plan – or belief.
