Barcelona have taken a significant step towards normality in the transfer market after returning to LaLiga’s 1:1 financial fair play rule.

The change means the Catalan club can now spend one euro on the squad for every euro it generates or frees up, a situation it had not enjoyed since the 2019-20 season.

A long-awaited financial breakthrough

According to Cadena SER, club sources confirmed to EFE that Barcelona are now within LaLiga’s 1:1 rule, although neither the club nor LaLiga had announced it publicly at the time of the report.

That is an important distinction. The development has been confirmed through club sources, but it has not been presented as a formal statement from either Barcelona or the league.

For Barcelona, however, the practical impact is still considerable. After several seasons shaped by tight salary limits, delayed registrations and difficult market decisions, the club now has far more flexibility when planning signings and renewals.

What the rule changes

As explained by FC Barcelona, the 1:1 rule means Barça can spend on sporting salaries in line with what its income and accounts allow.

In simple terms, it gives the club a clearer path to register players, renew contracts and reinvest savings made through departures or wage reductions.

Cadena SER reports that Barcelona reached this point by reducing salary costs in recent seasons, with the exits of Robert Lewandowski and Ansu Fati, as well as Andreas Christensen’s lower renewal, mentioned among the most recent examples. The club has also increased income through sponsorship agreements and the return to Spotify Camp Nou.

Deco gets more room to work

According to AS, Barcelona sources described the return to the 1:1 rule as a fact, while LaLiga also considers it to be the case.

The same report says the change opens a new door for sporting director Deco, who has had to work through several difficult transfer windows since arriving at the club.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta also struck an ambitious tone this week.

“Barcelona is in a position to take on any operation as long as it falls within economic logic,” Laporta said, according to AS.

That does not mean Barcelona can spend without limits. The club must still remain within LaLiga’s salary controls, and any major move will still have to make financial sense.

But compared with recent years, the change marks a major easing of pressure.

A platform for a stronger squad

The return to the 1:1 rule should make Barcelona less dependent on emergency sales or last-minute accounting solutions when trying to register players.

It also gives the club a stronger position in negotiations, particularly as Deco looks to reshape the squad for the coming season.

A new forward is expected to be one of the priorities after Lewandowski’s departure, with Julián Álvarez already being linked in the Spanish press.

For Barcelona, this is not a return to unchecked spending. It is a return to something the club has badly needed: the ability to plan with greater freedom.
