FC Porto have reached an agreement with Rennes to bring Seko Fofana back to the Estádio do Dragão on another season-long loan.
The Ivorian midfielder was expected in Porto on 25 August to undergo a medical and sign his contract. Neither club had officially confirmed the new move when this article was prepared.
Agreement reached between the clubs
Record reported that Porto and Rennes had reached a complete agreement and were finalising the documentation required for the loan.
Fofana is expected to spend the entire 2026-27 season in Portugal. The deal remains dependent on the medical examination and the player completing the formalities.

That distinction matters because the midfielder cannot be presented as an official signing until those steps have been completed.
Nevertheless, reports in Portugal describe the agreement as settled. Unless an unexpected problem emerges during the medical, Fofana will return only a few months after his first Porto spell ended.
The finances unlocked the return
Porto will reportedly not pay Rennes a loan fee. The Portuguese champions are instead expected to assume responsibility for Fofana’s salary during the coming season.
The midfielder was said to earn approximately €6 million gross per year in France, a figure outside Porto’s normal wage structure.

According to A Bola, Fofana accepted a significant salary reduction because he wanted to return to Porto and work with Francesco Farioli again.
That willingness appears to have been decisive. It allowed Porto to bring back an experienced international without paying a transfer or loan fee.
For Rennes, the arrangement removes a considerable salary from the budget while providing Fofana with regular football at a club where he has already succeeded.
Six months changed Porto’s season
Fofana originally joined Porto from Rennes on loan in February 2026. The French club’s official announcement stated that he had made 29 appearances, including 17 starts, during his first year in Brittany.

He quickly became an important part of Farioli’s midfield. His physical strength, forward running and ability to enter the penalty area added another dimension to Porto’s game.
When he arrived, Fofana told FC Porto’s official website: “I am a player who always gives my best. I like to tire myself out.”
His performances supported that description. Fofana made 17 appearances in all competitions and helped Porto secure the Portuguese championship with two matches remaining.
Rennes later congratulated him on the title, noting that Porto had established a nine-point advantage over Benfica.

One of Fofana’s biggest moments came away to Braga. His winning goal secured a 2-1 victory that proved important during Porto’s decisive run towards the championship.
Farioli gets a familiar solution
The 31-year-old gives Farioli a midfielder who already understands the coach, the squad and the demands of Portuguese football.
Fofana can provide power in central areas, carry the ball through pressure and make late runs towards goal. He also offers an experienced alternative when Porto need greater control or physical intensity.
His return has been linked to Rodrigo Mora’s departure for Roma, which removed one of Porto’s most creative midfield options.

Fofana is not a direct replacement for Mora, but his familiarity with the team reduces the risk normally associated with a late transfer.
The medical examination and signature remain the final obstacles. If both are completed as expected, Porto will regain a proven title winner without paying a loan fee.
