FIFA peace prize shitstorm: Dubai airport shuts down and Iran crisis deepens

A new Fifa award under fire

In December 2025, Fifa introduced the Fifa Peace Prize and presented the first award to United States President Donald Trump during the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, D.C.

According to Reuters, Fifa said the prize was created to recognize “individuals who have taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and by doing so have united people across the world.” The organization did not publish a shortlist of nominees or outline a formal selection process.

According to The Associated Press, Fifa President Gianni Infantino praised Trump at the ceremony and cited diplomatic engagement and leadership efforts. The award is not affiliated with the Nobel Peace Prize or any independent peace institution.

Why Trump was selected

Fifa stated that Trump was honored for leadership in diplomatic initiatives. According to BBC News, critics questioned the transparency of the new award and whether a global sports body should grant a peace themed prize to a sitting political leader.

Infantino has previously spoken positively about Trump’s international role. According to The Guardian, those remarks fueled perceptions that the award reflected Infantino’s own views rather than a clearly structured independent evaluation.

Fifa has not released additional documentation clarifying the criteria used in the decision.

Dubai airport shutdown and regional airspace closures

The controversy surrounding the Peace Prize has intensified following dramatic developments in the Gulf.

According to Reuters and The Associated Press, Dubai International Airport temporarily suspended operations after regional airspace closures linked to escalating military exchanges between Iran and the United States and Israel. Dubai International is widely described as one of the world’s busiest international hubs, handling hundreds of thousands of passengers daily.

Emirates confirmed widespread flight suspensions, and authorities advised passengers not to travel to the airport while operations were halted. Similar airspace restrictions were reported in Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait as governments responded to missile and drone activity across the region.

According to The Guardian, explosions and fires were reported in parts of Dubai following Iranian retaliatory strikes targeting strategic sites in the Gulf. Kuwaiti officials also reported drone activity near Kuwait International Airport, with injuries and damage under investigation.

Authorities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai have also instructed hotels to extend stays for travelers unable to depart due to the airspace shutdowns. According to statements carried by India Today, local governments said accommodation costs for stranded passengers would be covered while flight operations remain suspended, as part of emergency contingency measures aimed at preventing mass displacement and congestion at transport hubs.

While viral social media posts described the situation as the entire Middle Eastern sky “closing,” aviation authorities characterized the shutdowns as emergency safety measures tied to active security threats.

Escalating rhetoric inside Iran

Viral footage circulating online appeared to show members of the Iranian Parliament burning the United States flag and chanting “Death to the United States.”

According to regional coverage cited by Reuters, Iranian lawmakers have used highly inflammatory rhetoric during parliamentary sessions following the strikes. Some social media accounts claimed extreme warnings involving nuclear threats, though major international news organizations have not confirmed any formal declaration of nuclear action.

Analysts interviewed by The Associated Press cautioned that such chants, while provocative, do not automatically translate into imminent military escalation. However, they acknowledged that the symbolism raises geopolitical tensions at an already volatile moment.

Military operations in Iran and Venezuela

According to The Associated Press, coordinated United States and Israeli strikes targeted Iranian military infrastructure earlier this year, prompting retaliatory missile and drone launches. Iranian state media reported the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Separately, United States forces conducted an operation in Venezuela in January 2026 that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. The move drew criticism from several Latin American governments and legal scholars.

These confirmed military developments have fueled intense debate over whether awarding a Peace Prize during active hostilities creates a contradiction between symbolism and policy.

Fifa stands by its decision

Fifa has not withdrawn the Peace Prize and has publicly defended the award.

According to statements reported by The Associated Press, the organization reiterated that the prize is meant to honor efforts promoting unity and cooperation. Fifa did not directly address whether current military conflicts align with the spirit of the award’s title.

The governing body emphasized its collaboration with 2026 World Cup host nations, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico, but did not link that partnership to a detailed peace evaluation framework.

A peace prize in a moment of crisis

The unfolding situation highlights a broader question about the intersection of sports, symbolism, and geopolitics.

According to BBC News analysis, global sporting institutions frequently face scrutiny when appearing to align with political leaders during periods of armed conflict. Supporters argue that diplomatic initiatives can coexist with security operations. Critics counter that a peace themed award carries heightened moral expectations, particularly when missiles, airspace closures, and regional instability dominate headlines.

As Dubai’s airport disruptions ripple through international travel networks and tensions with Iran remain high, Fifa’s Peace Prize remains in place. Whether the debate fades or intensifies will likely depend on how the geopolitical crisis evolves in the weeks ahead.
