Michael Olise had spent the summer creating goals for Kylian Mbappé and competing in front of packed World Cup stadiums. His next appearance came without boots, a professional kit or even a group of teammates he already knew.
The Bayern Munich and France winger joined an amateur game in New York while wearing an orange T-shirt, loose chequered trousers and only socks on his feet. The players had arrived expecting an ordinary recreational match and instead found themselves trying to defend against one of the World Cup’s most productive attackers.
From the World Cup to a public pitch
According to Sophia Vesely in Sports Illustrated’s report from New York, Olise remained in the United States after France finished fourth at the World Cup. He joined a game organised through GoodRec, a platform that helps local players arrange informal matches.
Video from the game showed Olise receiving the ball on the right, moving inside onto his stronger left foot and attempting the type of curling finish regularly seen for Bayern. His clothes were so loose that he occasionally stepped on the bottom of his trousers while running.

There was no special protection for the 24-year-old and no attempt to turn the game into a formal appearance. Olise played alongside the other participants, remained for a group photograph and treated the evening as an ordinary kickabout.
GoodRec later shared footage with the message: “He still beats us in socks.” The short sentence captured the considerable difference between a recreational player and someone who had just spent a month performing on football’s largest stage.
English football shaped his career
The scene had a familiar quality for a player raised in London and developed within English football. Olise spent time in the academies of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City before establishing himself at Reading.
As described by Bayern Munich in its official player profile, he made his senior breakthrough in the Championship before joining Crystal Palace in 2021. He became one of the Premier League’s most exciting creative players during three seasons at Selhurst Park.

Palace supporters became accustomed to the same movement later seen on the New York pitch. Olise would begin on the right, allow defenders to believe they had shown him away from goal and then cut inside onto his left foot.
Bayern activated the clause in his Palace contract in 2024. The move ended his Premier League career, but the spontaneous game in New York looked much closer to his English football upbringing than to the controlled environment of an elite German club.
His World Cup ended against England
Olise entered the World Cup as one of France’s principal creative players and finished it as the tournament’s leading assist provider. The French Football Federation credits him with seven assists across the competition.
France’s campaign ended with two painful results. Spain defeated Les Bleus 2-0 in the semi-final before England won an extraordinary third-place match 6-4 in Miami.

Olise failed to score during the tournament despite creating opportunities for France’s celebrated attacking line. The match against England therefore completed a brilliant individual competition without providing the medal France had expected.
The New York game took place only days later. Instead of immediately leaving the United States or withdrawing completely from football, Olise found a pitch and returned to playing without pressure.
Bayern’s most productive player
The casual appearance should not disguise the scale of Olise’s rise since leaving Palace. Bayern named him its player of the season for the second consecutive year after another extraordinary campaign in Munich.
According to Bayern’s official announcement of the award, Olise recorded 25 goals and 28 assists in 57 competitive appearances during the 2025/26 season. He received 51.4 per cent of the supporters’ vote, finishing ahead of Harry Kane and Luis Díaz.

Those figures have prompted repeated speculation about Real Madrid. Bayern, however, have stated that no approach has been received and that Olise will remain in Germany.
The player at the centre of those discussions appeared unconcerned by the noise. For one evening in New York, he was neither a transfer target nor a World Cup star, only the best player in a local game by an almost unfair distance.
