French giants PSG eye Chelsea midfielder

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly monitoring Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez as the two clubs prepare to meet in the Champions League round of 16 this week.

The teams face each other at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday in the first leg of their knockout tie, a match that could also give PSG officials a closer look at a player they are believed to admire.

French newspaper L’Equipe reports that the Ligue 1 champions view the Argentina international as a midfielder capable of fitting into Luis Enrique’s technical, possession-based system. According to the outlet, PSG have already made contact with Fernandez’s representatives despite the player being under contract at Chelsea until 2032.

Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in February 2023 in a deal worth £107 million, which at the time set a British transfer record. Since then he has become a central figure in the club’s midfield, regularly contributing both creatively and defensively across more than 150 appearances.

Reports have suggested the 25-year-old earns around £180,000 per week at Stamford Bridge, placing him among Chelsea’s top earners. Any attempt by PSG to sign him would likely require a significant financial commitment, particularly as Chelsea would be reluctant to sell a player tied to a long-term contract.

PSG have increasingly focused on technically gifted midfielders under Enrique, with players such as Joao Neves, Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha forming the core of their current setup. Fernandez would face strong competition for a starting role if he were to move to Paris.

Meanwhile, the immediate focus for Chelsea remains the Champions League tie. Head coach Liam Rosenior has made an encouraging start since taking over at Stamford Bridge on 6 January, with his side losing only to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal while securing notable victories against Aston Villa and Napoli.

The upcoming clash with the reigning European champions represents Rosenior’s most demanding test so far.

Fernandez has previously spoken positively about PSG’s recent rise. After last summer’s Club World Cup — where Chelsea defeated the French club in the final — he told La Nacion: “Today I believe so (they are the best team on the planet); they have achieved it in recent months and their level of play has also been improving.”

Whether PSG turn their interest into a formal approach remains uncertain, but the Argentine midfielder will be under the spotlight when the two clubs meet in Paris.
