Liverpool right-back Jeremie Frimpong has responded with grace and support following his exclusion from Ronald Koeman’s 26-man Netherlands squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
The 25-year-old, who joined Liverpool last summer, was a notable omission when Koeman unveiled his selection on Wednesday. Despite the personal disappointment of missing out on international football’s showpiece event, Frimpong quickly took to social media to back his national team colleagues.
Koeman cites “physical problems” for Frimpong’s absence
Explaining his decision to leave the dynamic full-back out, Ronald Koeman pointed to fitness concerns. The Netherlands manager stated that Frimpong had been experiencing “several physical problems,” which ultimately led to his omission from the squad.
While Frimpong will not be heading to the World Cup, a strong Liverpool contingent will still represent the Oranje. Club teammates Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, and captain Virgil van Dijk were all named in Koeman’s squad, ensuring a familiar presence from Anfield.

Frimpong’s message of support
Despite the setback, Frimpong’s message to his teammates was one of unwavering encouragement. Writing on Instagram, as reported by SportBible, the defender conveyed his commitment to supporting the squad from afar.
“It wasn’t meant to be this time, but I’ll be the first one supporting the boys every step of the way this summer,” Frimpong posted.
Frimpong was not the only high-profile player to miss out on Koeman’s final selection. Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee also failed to make the cut, as did Burnley forward Zian Flemming, who had an impressive season in the Premier League, scoring 11 goals.
The squad announcement sets the stage for the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign, with Frimpong now focused on his club duties and future international opportunities.
