Anthony Gordon broke his Barcelona duck inside two minutes on Saturday night to set up a 3-0 home win over Getafe that moved Hansi Flick’s side onto a club-record-equalling eight wins from eight La Liga games.
The England winger, 25, finished off a flowing move in the second minute at the Spotify Camp Nou for his first goal in a Blaugrana shirt, four months after a summer transfer from Newcastle that Sky Sports valued at £69.3m. Gabriel Jesus doubled the lead on the half-hour mark on his first start since arriving from Arsenal, and Jules Koundé rounded off the scoring in the 73rd minute.
The win took Barcelona to 24 points, five clear at the top of La Liga. Flick’s side have scored 34 goals and conceded only seven in eight matches.
Gordon off the mark
Gordon was the livewire of a reshuffled front line, drifting across the attack before being withdrawn in the 72nd minute.
“As soon as I knew Barca was a serious option, there was never any question. I always wanted Barca,” he said when his move was confirmed on 29 May, as reported by Sky Sports.
Jesus, who had played only 34 minutes of competitive football for the club before Saturday, pounced on a Getafe defensive error for his first goal in Catalonia.
Matching Tata Martino’s 2013-14 mark
Eight consecutive league wins to open a campaign is a line Barcelona have reached only once before. The 2013-14 side under Gerardo “Tata” Martino did it, and this group have now matched that benchmark. Across all competitions the run stretches to nine straight, a tally the club has not posted since the 1935-36 season.
Flick rotated heavily from the side that beat Sevilla 3-1 in the previous league round, with Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Galatasaray on his mind. Captain Raphinha was absent, sidelined by a right thigh injury picked up on Brazil duty.
Koundé’s goal brought him a personal landmark too. The 73rd-minute strike came on his 194th appearance for Barcelona, making him the French player with the most games for the club across all competitions.
Galatasaray away before the Clasico
Barcelona travel to Istanbul on 13 October for Galatasaray in the Champions League. The next La Liga assignment is bigger still: El Clasico at home to Real Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday 25 October, with kick-off set for 9pm local time.
Real Madrid kept the pressure on at the top on Saturday, edging Villarreal 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu through a Yan Diomande strike after the hour, in a match that ended with Vinícius Júnior being sent off.
