Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Saturday that Arda Guler’s extension at Real Madrid is finished bar the formalities.

“The new contract for Arda Guler at Real Madrid is done, closed and sealed, just waiting for the official procedures,” Romano said.

The new six-year contract will keep the Turkey midfielder at the Santiago Bernabeu until June 2032. His previous deal was due to run out in the summer of 2029, so the new terms add three seasons beyond that. The 21-year-old is also set to receive a substantial pay rise on his current salary.

Guler arrived from Fenerbahce in the summer of 2023 and spent much of his first season managing injuries. He has become a regular under Jose Mourinho this term, used mainly as an attacking midfielder ahead of the club’s record summer signing Yan Diomande.

Mourinho’s bumpy start

Mourinho took charge in June 2026 on a three-year deal running to 2029, and his first league campaign has been inconsistent rather than smooth.

Locking down Guler is one of the few straight lines in a start that has otherwise refused to settle. His pathway in the Mourinho setup, as an attacking midfielder rather than a central midfielder, means less direct competition from Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni, and a clearer run at the number ten role.

Mourinho’s first Clasico

Real Madrid’s next league fixture is at Villarreal on Saturday 10 October, before the trip to Barcelona. The sides meet at Camp Nou in El Clasico on Sunday 25 October, kick-off at 9pm local time, Mourinho’s first league meeting with Hansi Flick’s side since returning to Spain.
