“He breaks promises”: NHL legend condemns Donald Trump over Ukraine
Former NHL star Dominik Hasek has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump following renewed Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, casting doubt on recent claims that Moscow had agreed to temporarily halt its bombardment.
Writing on the social media platform X, Hasek accused Trump of indifference toward Ukraine and of misleading the public about Russia’s intentions. The Czech hockey legend has been one of the most outspoken sports figures backing Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.
Hasek’s comments came after Trump said before the weekend that he had personally asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to pause attacks on Ukrainian cities for one week because of freezing winter temperatures. Trump claimed Putin had agreed to the request.
However, reports from Ukraine suggested otherwise.

Attacks reported despite diplomatic claims
Russian forces carried out additional strikes overnight from Friday into Saturday, targeting Kyiv and other major urban areas that have been repeatedly hit in recent weeks.
According to the New York Post, at least five people were killed and several others injured in the latest wave of attacks. The newspaper reported damage across multiple locations, with emergency services responding throughout the night. Independent confirmation of the casualty figures was not immediately available.
Ukrainian cities have faced sustained missile and drone strikes as Russia continues its campaign against civilian and military targets.
Hasek’s criticism
In his post on X, Hasek said Trump had shown “complete indifference” to the fate of Ukraine and its people, accusing him of breaking promises and misleading the public. Hasek went further, alleging that Trump was effectively cooperating with Putin by promoting claims that contradicted events on the ground.

The former goaltender, an Olympic champion and Hockey Hall of Famer, has repeatedly used his public platform to denounce Russia’s invasion and to criticize Western leaders he believes are failing to respond decisively.
War context
Russian attacks in recent weeks have increasingly focused on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving tens of thousands of civilians without reliable access to electricity, heating, and water during winter conditions. Ukrainian officials say the cumulative damage continues to grow with each new strike, deepening humanitarian risks.
Hasek’s latest remarks highlight the gap between diplomatic rhetoric and battlefield realities, as reports of continued bombardment undermine claims of restraint.
The former hockey star has previously criticized Trump in similar terms, consistently linking his remarks to Russia’s ongoing military actions in Ukraine.
