Real Madrid are on their way back into the club association they walked away from, Nasser Al-Khelaifi confirmed on Tuesday. Speaking at the 33rd EFC General Assembly in Copenhagen, the PSG president and EFC chairman thanked Florentino Pérez for what he called a commitment to unity and told the room Real Madrid were “in the process of returning to the EFC family”.

Real Madrid were not officially represented at the assembly. Anas Laghrari, a close adviser to Pérez, was in the room on behalf of A22, the company promoting the Super League project. Pérez himself did not attend.

“During the half an hour we spoke, we reached an agreement,” Al-Khelaifi said of his exchange with Pérez, according to Africa Soccer.

“Florentino and Real Madrid deserve more respect. He has done everything for football, and I do not know how many Champions Leagues they have won in recent years.”

Barcelona’s return sealed in the room

Barcelona were the other headline guest. President Joan Laporta was in Copenhagen to complete a return the EFC board had formally approved on 13 February 2026, Barca Universal reported, and Al-Khelaifi used his opening address to acknowledge it.

“I would like to thank the president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, for his trust in the European Club Association: welcome back to the club family,” Al-Khelaifi said in remarks carried by Goal.com.

Barcelona had been out of the body since backing the Super League plan alongside Real Madrid.

“It is truly saddening to see the current situation. Instead of elevating our sport, we waste time dealing with problems and difficulties,” Al-Khelaifi said of the years of infighting.

A public appeal to Ceferin

The Copenhagen meeting also became the stage for Al-Khelaifi’s most direct political move of the day: a call for UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin to run again.

“On behalf of more than 900 clubs in the association, we ask you to stand again for the presidency next year,” Al-Khelaifi said, quoted by Africa Soccer.

Ceferin is expected to announce his decision in December, with the UEFA Congress that would decide any election set for Kazakhstan in April 2027.
