José Mourinho’s defence of Kylian Mbappé reportedly stops at the dressing-room door.
Spanish journalist Pipi Estrada told late-night talk show El Chiringuito that the Real Madrid coach took the France forward aside at breakfast on Tuesday at the Valdebebas training complex, with other members of the squad present, after Mbappé had spent part of his international-break recovery in Paris.
“Something happened at breakfast. José Mourinho took Kylian Mbappé aside, with witnesses,” Estrada told the programme.
According to Estrada, Mourinho’s reported line to Mbappé was short.

“I will defend you outside, but not here.”
A Paris trip that was quietly approved
The twist is that Mbappé’s days away from Madrid were, formally, not an act of defiance. He had hyperextended the posterior capsule of his left knee while scoring the winning goal for France against Turkey, and the recovery period was signed off by Mourinho, his coaching staff and the club’s medical team as active rest away from the training complex.
What El Chiringuito surfaced was a different story: that Mbappé had not been seen at Valdebebas for two days during that window, and that Mourinho was less relaxed about the arrangement than the official line suggested. Images of Mbappé in Paris with his partner intensified the row in Spain.
The cycling warning Mbappé seemed to answer
The friction has a backdrop. Mourinho had publicly warned his squad against activities he regards as unnecessary risks during recovery.

“A player can’t ski in the mountains, he can’t ride a bicycle. It has to do with the importance you give to your work,” Mourinho said earlier in the week.
Days later, Mbappé posted an Instagram clip of himself cycling in Switzerland, soundtracked by Michel Fugain’s “Les gentils, les méchants” and a lyric that translates as “Who is the bad one? The very bad one?” The video appeared on October 4. Mbappé did not label it a response. Spanish media read it as one anyway.
Barcelona on October 25 is the real deadline
Real Madrid still expect Mbappé to be available when Villarreal visit the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, with kick-off at 9pm local time. The deadline behind the deadline is El Clásico against Barcelona on October 25, the fixture the club has prioritised for his full fitness.
Estrada, on the same El Chiringuito segment, floated a sharper prediction for the Villarreal game than the club’s.
