Inter’s bold transfer gamble as Cancelo talks collide with Saudi interest

Inter reassess defensive strategy amid market movement

Inter Milan are reviewing their defensive options as the summer transfer window develops, with club executives assessing how best to balance sporting needs and financial realities. Discussions are ongoing, but no final decisions have been made as the club monitors both incoming and outgoing possibilities.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Inter’s leadership is holding internal talks focused on reshaping the back line, with particular attention on the right back position.

Cancelo’s salary looms large in negotiations

Inter president Giuseppe Marotta addressed the situation directly when asked about João Cancelo, whose name has emerged as a potential target. Speaking to Fabrizio Romano, Marotta acknowledged that financial factors remain a major obstacle.

“João Cancelo has a huge salary, we are in talks to understand the situation. We need a new RB,” Marotta said.

The comments suggest that while Cancelo fits Inter’s tactical profile, the club is cautious about committing to a deal that could disrupt its wage structure. Inter are continuing to evaluate whether a compromise can be reached that aligns with long term planning.

The Cancelo talks are not occurring in isolation. According to Romano, Inter are also considering adjustments at centre back, which could influence how negotiations unfold.

Marotta confirmed earlier reporting that one of Francesco Acerbi or Stefan de Vrij could be included as part of a broader arrangement rather than a straightforward transfer. Such a move would allow Inter to address multiple squad needs simultaneously while limiting cash expenditure.

Saudi interest adds another layer of uncertainty

External interest may play a decisive role in how the situation develops. According to Fabrizio Romano, Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal are actively searching for a new centre back, a factor that could accelerate talks involving Inter defenders.

“Al Hilal want a new centre back, we will see,” Marotta said, underlining that discussions remain open and subject to change.

For now, Inter are navigating a delicate scenario where financial discipline, squad balance, and international demand are all shaping the club’s next move.
