Andreeva is not scrolling. On the eve of her first WTA Finals, the world No. 3 told reporters in Indian Wells that she keeps her distance from the noise of social media.
“Of course, I try not to read too much into the comments or get too caught up in what people are writing,” she said at her pre-tournament press conference, as reported by Tennis World USA. “When I’ve done everything I need to do, I just get off social media and don’t spend much more time there.”
The remarks came after a leaked practice-court conversation drew wide attention. Jessica Pegula’s chat with her coach Mark Knowles was broadcast on the WTA’s YouTube livestream of player practices at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, where she described Andreeva as a “diva” who “needs to be humbled.”
Pegula’s hot mic
Pegula, who sits on the WTA Players’ Council, also said she had lost some respect for Andreeva’s coach Conchita Martinez, accusing her of egging on the teenager’s on-court behaviour. In the same conversation, relayed by Front Office Sports, Pegula suggested Andreeva would be an even stronger player if she had the mindset of fellow American Coco Gauff, currently world No. 4.

WTA takes ‘full responsibility’
The WTA apologised before the tournament began. In a statement carried by Al Jazeera, the tour said it took “full responsibility for failing to inform our players and their teams that microphones, in place to give fans a livestream of the players’ practice, were active on the courts at the WTA Finals.”
WTA chair Valerie Camillo apologised directly to Pegula and Knowles at a news conference on Friday, calling the episode “regrettable and unacceptable.” Pegula’s camp has said she was unaware her conversation was being broadcast and has contacted those involved personally.
Live streams of practice sessions have continued at the tournament without audio.
‘Divas in Chanel’
The two players appeared to defuse any friction on Instagram. As Essentially Sports noted, Andreeva shared a photo dump from the tournament’s Chanel-themed fashion shoot, including a shot of her alongside Pegula, with the caption “DIVAS.” Pegula replied: “Divas in Chanel.”
