The pass arrived in the 80th minute, Dortmund still goalless against a stubborn Eintracht Frankfurt side at Signal Iduna Park. Jobe Bellingham had been on the pitch for little more than a minute, Beier for twelve. The 21-year-old Englishman threaded the ball across the six-yard area, Beier swept it in, and a tense evening tipped Dortmund’s way at last.

For anyone who watched Jude Bellingham in black-and-yellow between 2020 and 2023, the sequence had an unsettlingly familiar ring. Jude signed for Dortmund as a 17-year-old from Birmingham City and left three years later as one of Europe’s most coveted midfielders, taking 92 Bundesliga appearances with him on the way to a move to Real Madrid. Jobe arrived in June 2025 on a club-record transfer from newly promoted Sunderland worth an initial £27.8 million.

Kovač turns to his finishers

Dortmund had not won a Bundesliga match since mid-September and had taken just one win from their previous four across all competitions. Head coach Niko Kovač rolled the dice late, bringing Beier on in the 68th minute to replace the ineffective Fábio Silva, then throwing Jobe Bellingham on in the 79th minute.

Kovač credited the bench afterwards.

“We’ve got a great team. Those who aren’t playing from the start, they’re the finishers. They’re the ones who close out the match, who decide things,” he told reporters, via AFP.

He added that Beier had struck the ball really well and that he was happy for the forward after a difficult spell.

A lead that lasted a day

Beier’s goal nudged Dortmund onto 17 points from seven matches, three clear of Bayern Munich with the champions still to play their matchday-seven fixture. Beier earned an 8.5-out-of-10 rating from Livescore’s player ratings, with Jobe Bellingham singled out for the “instant impact” of his substitute appearance.

Bayern reclaimed the lead the following day. Dayot Upamecano, Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise did the damage in a 3-1 win at Freiburg’s Europa-Park Stadion on Sunday, hauling Bayern level with Dortmund on 17 points but ahead on goal difference. The two clubs now sit first and second with identical records of five wins and two draws.

Dortmund’s next date on the fixture list makes the point sharper still: a DFB-Pokal second-round tie at Werder Bremen on Tuesday, followed by Der Klassiker away to Bayern on Saturday 31 October.
