Cristiano Ronaldo spent Tuesday publishing an eleven-slide statement to his 679 million Instagram followers, accusing Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word. Hours later, the Portugal manager was intercepted by CMTV at his front door in Aroeira and gave a reply of fewer than twenty words.

“I was in Leiria watching the under-21s’ game. Now I’ll read the statement, I have nothing to say.”

Jesus had been in Leiria earlier for Portugal’s 2-0 win over the Czech Republic in an under-21 fixture, and told the CMTV reporters he had not yet read a word of what Ronaldo had published that afternoon. Then he went inside.

Ronaldo’s eleven-slide communiqué

The statement ran to nearly 2,000 words across eleven slides on Instagram. In it, Ronaldo accused Jesus of breaking his word twice: first by telling him days before Portugal’s game in Norway that he would play 30 minutes, then having him warm up on matchday without bringing him on; and again at the subsequent press conference, where Ronaldo says Jesus abandoned a jointly agreed set of talking points and spoke with “aggressiveness”.

Ronaldo wrote that he had never asked for playing time and never interfered with any manager’s selections. He took responsibility for walking out of the Portugal camp, said he should accept whatever punishment the FPF decided on, and insisted he would be available for the national team again once that suspension was served. He also made clear he was not retiring from international football.

Jesus’s open-door Sunday

The Aroeira silence came three days after a very different line from the same manager. On Sunday, Jesus said Ronaldo would be welcome back whenever the player chose to return. FPF president Pedro Proença has described the row as a misunderstanding to be resolved.
