Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has been convicted of drink-driving, drawing sharp criticism from manager Jose Mourinho, who stated he was “not happy” with the player’s conduct. The conviction comes as Asencio was simultaneously acquitted in a separate, more serious case involving allegations of recording and distributing sexual images.

Mourinho’s disapproval follows drink-driving conviction

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with Raul Asencio following the defender’s conviction for drink-driving. Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Mourinho did not mince words regarding the 20-year-old’s actions.

“I am NOT happy with Raul Asencio,” Mourinho declared. He further elaborated on the expectations for a Real Madrid player, both on and off the pitch. “He is a great professional, no one trained like him. But a Real Madrid player is ALWAYS a Real Madrid player. Even off the pitch. What you do outside, HURTS the image of the club. What I’m saying is, I am NOT happy.”

The incident in question occurred on August 16 in Gran Canaria, where Asencio admitted to driving a Porsche Macan while under the influence of alcohol. Breathalyser tests revealed significant levels of alcohol in his system, approximately four times the legal limit of 0.25 mg/l:

As a result of the conviction, Asencio has been banned from driving for eight months and fined €14,400. Real Madrid has also initiated its own disciplinary proceedings against the player, opening an “expediente disciplinario,” as reported by Cope.es. The club is reportedly considering economic sanctions, a measure previously applied to players like Tchouameni and Fede Valverde, who faced a €500,000 fine after an altercation last season. Asencio had informed the club of the incident prior to the internal investigation. On the day of the incident, he was not with the squad for a friendly against Schalke 04 due to injury.

Acquitted in separate sexual images case

In a distinct legal matter, Asencio faced accusations of recording sexual images of a woman and a minor and subsequently distributing them. However, the Real Madrid defender was acquitted of these charges during a court appearance on Thursday afternoon. The prosecutor had withdrawn all charges against Asencio in this case.

A statement from the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria court, reported by ESPN, confirmed the outcome: “The footballer (Asencio) in question, against whom the prosecutor had withdrawn all charges, has been acquitted and is free to go. The ruling is final and definitively concludes the proceedings, as the parties have confirmed that they accept it and will not appeal.”

This acquittal definitively closes the proceedings for Asencio regarding these allegations, allowing him to focus on his professional career, albeit under the shadow of his recent drink-driving conviction and the public reprimand from his manager.
