Kylian Mbappe, the Real Madrid superstar and captain of the French national team, has ignited a political firestorm in France with his outspoken criticism of the far-right ahead of upcoming elections. His comments, which expressed deep concerns about the potential rise of Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigration National Rally party, have drawn both condemnation from political figures and strong private support from within the French squad as they prepare for the World Cup.

Mbappe’s strong words against the far-right

Mbappe, who boasts Cameroonian and Algerian heritage, made his stance clear, highlighting the personal implications of such a political shift. The forward, who has scored 41 goals across all competitions this season, voiced his apprehension about the National Rally potentially coming to power in next year’s election. His remarks were a direct challenge to the party, whose president, Jordan Bardella, and spokesperson, Julien Odoul, have been prominent figures in French politics.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, as reported by The Guardian, Mbappe articulated his fears: “I know what it means and what consequences it can have for my country when people like them come to power.” This powerful statement underscores the personal connection many, including Mbappe, feel towards the political landscape in France.

Political pushback and team solidarity

Mbappe’s intervention quickly drew responses from the political sphere. Marine Le Pen herself dismissed the influence of his comments, stating, “Frankly I think football fans are free enough to know who to vote for without being influenced by Mbappe.” Jordan Bardella, president of the National Rally, also took to his social media account to respond, making a thinly veiled jab at Mbappe’s departure from PSG: “I know what happens when Kylian Mbappé leaves PSG: the club wins the Champions League! (And maybe soon a second time).”

The backlash wasn’t limited to politicians, with some calls emerging for Mbappe to be stripped of his captaincy for the national team ahead of the World Cup. However, journalist Fabrice Hawkins reported a different sentiment within the French camp. According to Hawkins on his X account, the vast majority of Didier Deschamps’ squad privately stands in solidarity with their captain.

Hawkins stated, “Like it or not, KM [Kylian Mbappe] said out loud what the vast, vast majority of players on the French national team think.” This suggests a unified front among the players, backing Mbappe’s decision to speak out on a sensitive political issue.

As Mbappe prepares to lead France in the upcoming World Cup, wearing the captain’s armband, his political comments have added another layer of scrutiny and significance to his role, highlighting the intersection of sport and societal issues in contemporary France.
