Lamine Yamal’s World Cup breakthrough with Spain has carried a personal detail that reaches beyond the shirt he wears. During the warm-up before Spain’s match against Saudi Arabia at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the Barcelona winger had the flags of Morocco and Equatorial Guinea visible on the back of his Adidas F50 boots, according to SportBible’s Josh Lawless.

The gesture was a subtle reminder of the 18-year-old’s family roots. Yamal was born in Spain and has represented the country throughout his international career, but his father is Moroccan and his mother is from Equatorial Guinea. His choice of footwear offered a small but striking expression of that background on one of football’s biggest stages.

A quiet nod to his roots

Yamal’s international future was once a point of interest for more than one country. Morocco hoped to persuade him to represent the Atlas Lions, but the forward ultimately committed to Spain, the country where he grew up and developed as a footballer.

Equatorial Guinea has also followed his rise with pride. In 2024, Venancio Tomas Ndong Micha, president of the country’s football federation, told BBC Sport Africa: “Even though Lamine is not playing for Equatorial Guinea, we hold him very close in our hearts and think he is going to do many things for Equatoguinean football.”

That affection has endured even as Yamal has become one of Spain’s most important young players. The flags on his boots do not suggest divided loyalty. Rather, they underline the layered identity of a player whose career belongs to Spain, but whose family story also runs through North and Central Africa.

Spain’s new star steps forward

Yamal’s appearance against Saudi Arabia marked his first World Cup start after he had come off the bench in Spain’s opening 0-0 draw with Cape Verde. Against Saudi Arabia, he made a far greater impact, scoring early as Spain moved toward a convincing 4-0 victory.

His rise has already been rapid. He was a key figure in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph and has become one of Barcelona’s defining talents while still in his teens. Now, on the World Cup stage, he is carrying both national expectation and a personal story that is visible in the smallest details.

For Spain, Yamal represents the future of La Roja. For Morocco and Equatorial Guinea, he remains a source of pride. On his boots, at least, all three parts of that story were present in Atlanta.
