LeBron sparks debate with Israel remarks at All-Star Game
Speaking to reporters Sunday night at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, James was asked about Portland Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija, who became the first Israeli player selected to an NBA All-Star Game.
“I’ve been quoted on Deni already and asked what I think about his season. I said I believe he’s an All-Star. He plays exceptional basketball,” James said.
He then referenced basketball fans in Israel and the possibility of visiting the country.
“I’ve never been there, but if I have fans over there, then I hope you’ve been following my career,” he added. “I hope I inspire people over there not only to be great in sport but to be better in general, in life. Hopefully, someday I can make it over there. I’ve heard nothing but great things.”

The exchange occurred during a standard postgame media session following the league’s annual exhibition event.
Reaction on social media
Video of the remarks circulated widely on X, formerly Twitter, drawing mixed responses. Some users criticized James for not acknowledging the war in Gaza when speaking about Israel. Others argued he was answering a basketball-related question and did not introduce political commentary.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry whose casualty figures have been cited by the United Nations and reported by international news organizations more than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023. The conflict has prompted demonstrations and debate globally, including within sports and entertainment communities.
James has previously spoken out on social justice issues, most notably during the NBA’s 2020 restart in Florida following racial justice protests across the United States. That history has often placed his public comments under closer examination.

All-Star backdrop
This year’s All-Star Game introduced a round-robin format in place of the traditional Eastern Conference versus Western Conference matchup. James played for Team USA Stripes in a 47–21 loss to Team USA Stars, led by Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, who was named Most Valuable Player.
While the exhibition is typically focused on celebrating the league’s international talent and entertainment value, discussion following this year’s event extended beyond basketball.
