Despite a challenging start to his tenure with Scuderia Ferrari and a career now spanning into his 40s, Lewis Hamilton has firmly declared his intention to remain in Formula 1 for the foreseeable future. The seven-time world champion, who made a shock move to the Italian outfit for the 2025 season, remains resolute in his commitment to the sport.
Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari followed an incredibly dominant period with Mercedes, where he clinched six Drivers’ Championships between 2014 and 2020. However, his initial season in red proved difficult. In 2025, the Scuderia found itself losing ground to rivals McLaren, Mercedes, and Red Bull. Hamilton’s strongest result that year was a victory in the China Sprint, ultimately finishing sixth in the drivers’ standings.
Hamilton’s Ferrari journey and future outlook
The 2026 season has shown glimpses of improvement, with Hamilton securing his first Grand Prix podium for Ferrari at the Chinese Grand Prix, where he finished third. Now 41 years old, the British driver is unequivocal about his plans, dismissing any suggestions of impending retirement.
“Yeah, I’m still in contract so everything is 100% clear to me. I’m still focused, I’m still motivated, I still love what I do with all my heart,” Hamilton stated ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. “I’m going to be here for quite some time so get used to it. There’s a lot of people that are trying to retire me and that’s not even in my thoughts. I’m already thinking of what will be next and planning for the next five years. I still plan to be here for some time.”

Adapting to new challenges
Hamilton’s determination is coupled with an ongoing effort to adapt and integrate fully into his new team. Following two challenging rounds in Japan and Miami, he made the decision to abandon the simulator in his preparations for the Canadian Grand Prix, a move fully supported by Ferrari.
Reflecting on his role within the team, Hamilton emphasized the importance of collaboration. “I’m always trying to learn how I can be a better colleague, a better team mate to the people around me, how I can extract more from myself but also from the groups I get to work with,” he explained. “Teamwork really does make the dream work – it’s a real thing. When you have a huge group of people, there are so many different energies and you have to be quite dynamic to integrate into those different sections. I feel like I’m in a good place with my team. There’s always going to be teething issues and stuff that you have to work on but I’m really happy.”
As Ferrari continues its mission to close the gap to the front-runners, Hamilton’s unwavering commitment and experience will be crucial. His long-term vision suggests a deep-seated belief in the project and a desire to add more chapters to his legendary Formula 1 career.
