Liam Rosenior angry after comment from journalist: “You saying that has just got me angrier”

Things can move quickly in the Premier League.

Fine margins can decide big matches, and refereeing decisions are often debated long after the final whistle.

Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge was no exception.

Chelsea appeared firmly in control against Leeds United, holding a 2–0 advantage with around 25 minutes left to play.

João Pedro and Cole Palmer had put the home side ahead, and it looked as though the London club would come away with the victory.

However, things fell apart late on. Lukas Nmecha pulled one back, and shortly after, Noah Okafor equalised to make it 2–2.

In the closing stages, Palmer was presented with a decisive opportunity, but from close range he sent his shot over the crossbar.

That is according to GIVE ME SPORT.

Deeply confused

Leeds’ second goal sparked intense debate.

During the attacking move, the ball seemed to brush Jayden Bogle’s arm before Okafor applied the finish.

Chelsea’s players protested, but the goal was allowed to stand.

After the match, Liam Rosenior was asked about the incident, and he was clearly not pleased:

“The rule is if there’s any contact with his hand it should be disallowed but I haven’t seen it back to make that judgement,” he said.

The interviewer then told Rosenior that the goal stood because the handball was deemed ‘unintentional’. The Chelsea manager responded:

“The rule is the rule, from my understanding if there’s any handball in the lead up to a goal, it should be disallowed. (...) You saying that has just got me angrier".

Two sides to the story

However, former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett sees the situation differently.

Speaking to Football Insider, he explained that the ball first struck the body and then the arm, making it an accidental incident.

In his assessment, that sequence meant the officials were justified in letting the goal count.

As a result of the draw, Chelsea stay fifth in the Premier League table, sitting one point behind Manchester United.

They face their next challenge on Friday, when Chelsea take on Championship side Hull City in the FA Cup.
