Liverpool’s deadline day push for Malo Gusto ended with a straight no from Chelsea on 1 September. Six weeks on, the terms of that conversation have changed.
Chelsea are now willing to sell the 23-year-old in January 2027, and the £67m figure they were asking over the summer is being revisited, Dean Jones reports via Flashscore. Behind the shift sits Gusto’s role at Stamford Bridge: three Premier League starts this season under Xabi Alonso, with Pedro Neto often used at right wing-back and a recent £47m signing of Marco Palestra pushing the Frenchman further down the depth chart.
From a summer stand-off to a January rethink
Liverpool’s deadline day move was a loan without a mandatory purchase clause, and Chelsea rejected it. The Reds did not have the budget for a permanent deal at the summer valuation, and Gusto stayed put.
“Liverpool made a final push today to sign Malo Gusto on loan, but the attempt ended without success,” journalist Fabrice Hawkins reported on 1 September.

“The Reds were only willing to consider a loan with no mandatory buy clause, while Chelsea were pushing for a permanent transfer.”
Jones outlined Chelsea’s current thinking.
“Chelsea are not actively forcing Gusto towards the exit,” he said. “Their priority is to understand the options available, assess the market and establish whether there is a suitable replacement before making any definitive decision.”
Tottenham join the chase as Porro wavers
Tottenham have moved into the frame. The north London club see Gusto as a possible replacement for Pedro Porro, who has had injury problems this season and is reportedly weighing a move after interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

PSG, Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid are also assessing the situation, according to the same report, which cites Flashscore on the broader mood.
“A growing feeling that an exit in either of the two 2027 transfer windows is a realistic possibility if the right conditions emerge,” Flashscore wrote.
Contracted to 2030, but a shrinking role
Gusto is tied to Chelsea until the summer of 2030, with 141 appearances for the club, three goals and 18 assists. The current season reads differently. Three league starts and the Palestra signing point to a player no longer in Alonso’s first-choice XI, with the Spaniard preferring Neto as an attacking option on that flank.
Liverpool’s right-back puzzle has not resolved itself since Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid, and Jeremie Frimpong has not nailed down the slot. The January window opens on 1 January 2027.
