Liverpool may consider Isak sale if form does not improve
Alexander Isak’s long-term future at Liverpool has come under renewed scrutiny after former midfielder Dietmar Hamann suggested the club could eventually consider a sale if the striker’s situation does not improve.
Speaking to JeffBet in comments reported by GOAL, Hamann indicated that while Liverpool are unlikely to make knee-jerk decisions, sustained struggles combined with increased competition could force difficult conversations.
“I’m not sure Liverpool will sell anyone in January,” Hamann said. “But if things don’t pick up for Alexander Isak come March or April, they’ll probably have discussions to sell him to a club like Barcelona in the summer.”
Liverpool made Isak the most expensive signing in British football history last summer, paying £125 million to bring him from Newcastle United. The move was viewed as a cornerstone of Arne Slot’s rebuild, with the Sweden international expected to spearhead a title-contending attack.

So far, the return has been limited. Isak has scored two goals in 15 appearances, with injuries and a disrupted start playing a part. Missing pre-season slowed his adaptation to Slot’s tactical demands, and recurring fitness issues have made consistent selection difficult.
That has opened the door for Hugo Ekitike. Signed from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79 million, the French forward has delivered ten goals in 23 games and has increasingly been trusted in key fixtures. In Liverpool’s recent 2–0 win over Brighton, Ekitike started through the middle while Isak was introduced late, a pattern that has begun to reflect the current pecking order.
Hamann believes that dynamic could become decisive if it continues.
“There will be plenty of takers for Isak because he’s shown his ability at Newcastle,” he said. “It also largely depends on the form of Ekitike, because if he continues to improve, it will be a struggle for Isak to get games unless he’s forced out wide.”

Barcelona have been mentioned as a possible destination, although their financial position remains a complicating factor. The Catalan club may soon be in the market for a striker, with Robert Lewandowski nearing the end of his contract and linked with a move to MLS side Chicago Fire.
At present, there is no indication Liverpool are actively seeking to offload Isak. The club has historically backed major investments rather than retreating quickly. Still, with expectations high and internal competition intensifying, the coming months beginning with Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham on December 20 could prove important for both player and club.
