Lothar Matthäus thinks the Harry Kane contract debate at Bayern Munich has an answer, and he has written the clauses himself. Speaking at an RTL Germany media event on Friday, the 1990 World Cup winner suggested a two-year extension with a third, performance-linked year as the formula to keep the England captain in Munich past his current 2027 deal.
“You make it two years plus one and tie the final year to appearances,” Matthäus told the event, as reported by Goal.
The structure is a direct answer to the sticking point in talks: Bayern reportedly want a two-year extension, Kane wants three. The 33-year-old is close to agreeing a new deal, but the specifics have yet to be finalised.
A jab at the Germany coach
Running through the same interview was a shot at Klopp, who used a DAZN half-time slot during Bayern’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal on 21 October to question Kane’s positioning.

Klopp said on DAZN that he saw Kane “in the last line of defence, or pressing in midfield” and could not say that he understood the way Vincent Kompany’s side were playing, according to Livescore.
Matthäus’s reply, delivered with a wink, was that the Germany coach should “watch a few more matches”. He then made the case for exactly the freedom Klopp had queried.
“He is everywhere and is allowed to be everywhere. That makes him unpredictable.”
Taking that movement away, Matthäus argued, would strip Bayern of a core strength.

Kompany: ‘Next question’
Kompany, asked at a press conference about Klopp’s intervention, refused to be drawn in.
“I’m not saying anything about that. Next question,” the Belgian said, as covered by Goal.
Former Bayern captain and goalkeeper Oliver Kahn was less restrained, telling the same Goal piece he had to remind himself that Klopp was no longer a television pundit.
“I think this is also partly about collegiality between coaches. And I think a national team coach in particular has to know exactly what he’s saying,” Kahn added.

Kane answered on the pitch
On the night the Germany coach wondered aloud whether Kane was wasted in defensive positions, the striker scored a 61st-minute penalty and set up Alphonso Davies for Bayern’s opener in the 35th minute, according to the ESPN match report. Declan Rice’s late strike for Arsenal denied Bayern the win.
Bayern face Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday, 31 October.
