Erik Spoelstra opened the Heat’s visit to Crypto.com Arena with a scouting problem he could not solve by scheme alone.
“He creates a defense in a pick-and-roll coverage all to himself. It has to be so unique because of his talents,” Spoelstra said, according to Yahoo Sports.
The Miami coach said he wants his own group to lean on aggression and disruption as its identity rather than any coverage drawn up specifically for one star.
Bam Adebayo was blunter about the plan.

“We’re just going to try and make him make difficult shots,” Adebayo said, via Yahoo Sports, adding that Miami would use doubles to make Doncic see pressure and think.
Doncic has averaged 28.2 points, 8.9 rebounds and 7.1 assists in 14 career games against the Heat, shooting 45.2% from the field, according to Yahoo Sports. He also came into the matchup as the NBA’s current leader in points per game.
45 points, 15 rebounds, five steals
Doncic walked into the Heat week off a 45-point, 15-rebound Sunday against the Toronto Raptors. He added six assists and five steals in the Lakers’ 131-125 win, shooting 12-of-23 from the floor and 8-of-12 from three. Sixteen of those points, and four of the triples, came in the first quarter.
Los Angeles led by as many as 26 before Toronto cut it to five late. A 9-1 Lakers run once Doncic returned from the bench settled the result.

Austin Reaves added 19 points. Walker Kessler went 6-for-6 from the floor for 16 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. For Toronto, Scottie Barnes scored 29, RJ Barrett had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Jamison Battle finished with 20.
Kessler on Doncic’s defense
Kessler used his postgame comments to push a different storyline on his teammate.
“He had five steals and three charges. Incredible. Just incredible. Luka doesn’t get enough credit for his defense,” Kessler said, via Fadeaway World.
Kessler credited his teammate’s feel for the game. “His positional defense is being in the right spot at the right time, and it is really good,” he added.
